Summary

A leisurely walk covering some of the main attractions in the Darwin waterfront precinct.

Public transport

Catch a bus from the Darwin interchange down Mitchell Street.

Directions

The Darwin walk starts at the Eye of the Explorer Memorial, which is a memorial to John McDouall Stuart, a 19th century explorer and surveyor.  The memorial is at the north western entrance of Bicentennial Park and is just a short walk from the city.

From the memorial walk down to the Lookout Point which provides picturesque views of the harbour. This is a fantastic spot to stop and take in an incredible Darwin sunset.

Continue through the park in a southerly direction along Doctors Gully Rd. On the way you will notice a number of monuments paying tribute to armed service personnel who made a contribution to Australia during wartime service. One of these is the USS Peary Memorial, which commemorates the loss of 91 United States crew members killed when their ship was sunk by the Japanese during the bombing of Darwin in 1942.

Further down, at the south eastern end of the park, is the Darwin Cenotaph. The Cenotaph commemorates Australian men and women who have served in armed conflicts. From the Cenotaph head out of the park and walk up Herbert St in a northeasterly direction. At the end of Herbert St turn right into Mitchell Street and continue along Bennett St.

Walk past Bennett Park and the Visitor information Centre then turn right down Smith St. At the end of Smith St is the Darwin Waterfront Sky Bridge. Cross the Bridge and it will take you down to the Darwin waterfront precinct, which is where the walk ends.

The waterfront precinct contains restaurants, bars, a wave pool and a man-made beach. This is a fantastic place to have a swim and something to eat before you head back home.
