Directions

This walk begins in Brighton, a coastal suburb of Adelaide. To get there, catch a train from the city to Brighton station, which runs on the Seaford Line. From the station it is just a short walk down Marlborough St to the ocean esplanade.

Head down the esplanade in a northerly direction towards Brighton Jetty. The Jetty is a popular spot for locals and includes a War Memorial arch at the shore end of the jetty to commemorate the men and women who served in Australia’s defence forces.

From Brighton Jetty continue north, past the Somerton Surf Life Saving Club to Glenara Historic Mansion. Built in 1873 this building is a fine example of Italianate architecture. It includes an imposing central tower that accentuates its castle-like appearance.

From Glenara Mansion continue north along the esplanade to Glenelg Jetty. The Jetty and promenade are both very popular destinations for the locals and tourists alike, particularly in summer when people like to head to the beach to cool off.

The walk continues past Glenelg Jetty, down Holdfast promenade and then winds around Colley Reserve, which is a huge expanse of lawns close to the shops and the location of South Australia’s richest and most prestigious foot racing event, the Bay Sheffield Carnival.

From the north end of Colley Reserve walk along Anzac Highway and then turn right down Nile St, past St Peter’s Church, before walking back towards the beach along Jetty Road to Mosley Square. This last part of the walk provides a nice sample of the early 20th Century period architecture that gives Glenelg its charming character.

The walk end at the Mosley Square tram terminal.  From here you can investigate the local restaurant scene or catch a tram back to the city.
