Summary

The Fannie Bay walk starts in the coastal suburb of Fannie Bay, winds through the lush surroundings of Darwin’s Botanic Gardens, before ending near the city.

Public transport

Catch the bus from Darwin interchange to Fannie Bay.

Directions

The Fannie Bay walk begins in the Ken Waters Memorial Park located in the suburb of Fannie Bay. To get there catch a bus from the city.

From the park head west across Elizabeth St and East Point Rd. This will take you to the Ross Smith Memorial Park, which has a walking path along East Point Rd. Take this path and head in a southerly direction.

Walk along the path and you will pass Fannie Bay Gaol, which is located on the other side of East Point Rd. Fannie Bay Gaol is an historic site, which operated from 1883 to 1979 and is free to enter.

Further south you will pass Vestey’s Lagoon and the Darwin Bowls Club, which is one of Darwin’s oldest bowls club.

At the intersection of Goyder Rd and East Point Rd the path ends and East Point Rd turns into Gilruth Ave.  Cross over at the Goyder Rd intersection and continue to head south along Gilruth Ave.

The walk continues down Gilruth Ave until you reach Gardens Rd on the left. Follow the path down Gardens Rd, where you will pass the Darwin Botanic Gardens. Founded in 1886, the Botanic Gardens were established to determine which plants were suitable for the tropics. If you need a rest you could deviate from the path here and find a suitable place to sit under a tropical tree out of the sun.

Once you have passed the Botanic Gardens continue down Gardens Rd using the path that hugs the cricket ground and golf course side of the road. The walk finishes at the south end of Gardens Park near the city centre.
