Directions
Starting point – Hobart Town Hall
The Hobart cenotaph walk begins across the road from Hobart Town Hall on Macquarie St. The Town Hall is a landmark sandstone building in Hobart, which opened in 1866.
From the Town Hall walk down Macquarie St until you reach Campbell St. Turn left down Campbell St and walk past the Theatre Royal on your right. The Theatre Royal is the oldest continually operating theatre in Australia and was completed using convict labour in 1836.
At the corner of the Royal Hobart Hospital turn right down Liverpool St heading in a northeasterly direction. Continue down Liverpool St until you see the railway roundabout, which has a small park in the middle and a underground walkway that leads to the park.
From Liverpool St take the underground walkway to the park. At the opposite end of the park is the Australian Broadcast Corporation (ABC) building to your right and the University Rose Gardens directly ahead. Take the underpass that leads to the University Rose Gardens and continue walking in a northerly direction.
When you reach the middle of the University Rose Gardens take the path that heads in an easterly direction over Aberdeen St, around the Doone Kennedy Aquatic Centre and towards the Bridge of Remembrance.
Walk across the Bridge of Remembrance and down ANZAC parade to the Hobart Cenotaph with its magnificent views across the River Derwent. The Cenotaph is the main commemorative military monument in Tasmania. Originally erected to commemorate Tasmanian Soldiers killed in WW1, subsequent additions have been made to commemorate all conflicts where Tasmanian soldiers have served.
From the Cenotaph head in a westerly direction away from the river and towards the end of the Tasman Hwy where it joins Davey St. You will see some steps which lead to a footpath that joins to Davey St.
Finish – Constitution Dock
Walk along Davey St in a southerly direction until you reach Constitution Dock where the walk ends. From here you can walk back to the city, or just take a minute to enjoy the river views!
