Directions

Starting point – The Big Cactus

The Perth city walk starts at the Big Cactus in Forrest Place, which is next to Perth Myer opposite the Perth train station on Wellington St.

From the Big Cactus walk down Forrest Place in a southerly direction and then turn right up the Murray St mall heading west. Continue down Murray St and then turn left down King St. At Hay St turn left and head east, walking back in the direction of the Murray St Mall. Hay St turns into the Hay St Mall, a shopping precinct in the centre of Perth with numerous retail outlets.

Continue down the Hay St Mall until you come to London court, on open roofed arcade built in 1937. The court has a distinctive mock Tudor facade with a large clock that chimes every quarter-hour. Walk through London Court and exit onto St Georges Tce turning left in an easterly direction.

From St George Tce turn left up Barrack St and right down Hay St past the Perth Town Hall, which is a distinctive red brick building constructed in 1870 with the help of convict labour.

Continue past the Town Hall along Hay St and then turn right into Cathedral Ave walking past St George’s Anglican Cathedral. Constructed between 1879 and 1888 the cathedral is a fine example of Gothic architecture built using locally made brick, limestone from Rottnest Island and Western Australian jarrah.

At the other end of Cathedral Ave turn left and head down St Georges Tce in an easterly direction. Continue to the end of St Georges Tce, turn right down Victoria Rd and then right again down Terrace Rd. Terrace Rd turns into Governors Ave and is adjacent to the Supreme Court Gardens, an extensive grassed area including mature trees, pathways and garden beds located next to the Supreme Court of Western Australia.  Walk through the gardens heading in a westerly direction and exit in the direction of the distinctive Perth Bell tower located in Barrack Square. Continue through Barrack square towards the waterfront and then turn right down Valdura Place.

Finish – Elizabeth Quay

The final part of the walk winds through Elizabeth Quay, an urban renewal project that opens to the Swann River in the south. The quay was officially opened on 29 January 2016. From Valdura Place cross over the Elizabeth Quay footbridge and walk along the ferry route path that passes the ferry terminal. The walk ends around the corner on William St opposite the Elizabeth Quay train station.
