Directions

The London landmarks walk starts near the sundial outside Tower Hill Station. Directly opposite the tube station on the other side of Tower Hill Rd is the Tower of London, one of England’s most famous and historic landmarks. Founded in 1066 the Tower has played a prominent role in English history, as an armoury, treasury, and the home of the Crown Jewels of England.

From the sundial walk up Tower Hill and then Byward St travelling in a westerly direction. From here turn up Great Tower St and Eastcheap. At the end of Eastcheap turn left down Fish St Hill past the monument to the Great Fire of London. The Great Fire, which is believed to have started in a bakery in Pudding Lane destroyed 13,200 houses, 87 churches and St Paul’s Cathedral. The monument to the fire is a column built of Portland stone and has a viewing platform on top, which can be accessed by climbing a narrow winding staircase of 345 steps.

At the end of Fish St Hill turn right down Lower Thames St passing London Bridge. Lower Thames St becomes Upper Thames St. Continue along Upper Thames St in a northwesterly direction and then turn right up Queens St Place. On Queens St turn left up Cannon St until you reach St Paul’s Cathedral, one of the most recognisable sights in London. St Paul’s, which sits at the highest point of the city was constructed between 1675 and 1710 and replaces the old church, which was gutted during the Great Fire of London.

From St Paul’s head south towards the river down Peter’s Hill. At the river cross Millennium Bridge, a pedestrian footbridge that crosses the Thames and opened in June 2000. On the other side of the bridge, turn right and walk along the riverbank in a westerly direction. You will pass Tate Modern, which is one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary art in the world. The journey continues along the riverbank travelling in a westerly direction until you reach Blackfriars station, which is where the walk ends.
