Directions

Starting Point – Spring St and Lafayette

The Greenwich Village walk starts outside the subway entrance on Spring St, near the corner of Spring and Lafayette St. From here continue up Spring St in a northwesterly direction and then turn left down Crosby St. At the end of Crosby St turn right on to Broome St and then right again on Broadway. On the corner of Broadway and Broome St is the Haughwout building. Built in 1857 the Haughwout is famous for its cast iron facade and the fact that it included the world’s first successful passenger elevator.

From the Haughwout building continue north up Broadway before turning left on Spring St and then right on Mercer St. At the corner of Mercer St and Prince St turn left down Prince St and walk in a northwesterly direction. This will take you past SoHo’s high end shopping precinct, which includes stores such as Louis Vuitton and the Ralph Lauren. A restaurant precinct is located at the western end of Prince St.

Continue up Prince St then turn right on Sullivan St. On Sullivan St you will pass St Anthony of Padua Church built in 1888. The church was the first parish in the United States formed specifically for the Italian immigrant community.

From here continue up Sullivan St, turn left up Bleecker St, right up MacDougal St, right up W 3rd St, then left down Thompson St. Further up Thompson St you will notice the Judson Memorial Church.  The church, which is located in Greenwich Village, was completed in 1893 and said to resemble the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, Italy.

From the Judson Memorial Church walk across the road to Washington Square Park. The park has a fountain in the middle and an arch at its northern entrance. Walk through the arch and continue heading north up 5th Avenue. At W 9th St, turn left and then right onto 6th Avenue.

Finish – Jefferson Market Library

You will pass Jefferson Market Garden and then the Jefferson Market Library where the Greenwich Village walk ends. Originally built in 1877 as a district courthouse  the building was converted into a library in 1967 and placed on the national register of historic places in 1972.  The building also has a beautiful interior making it a great place to take a break and explore the library’s collection if you have the time.

To get home you can catch the subway from 9th St station, which is located just across the road.
