(* Assumes average walking speed of 4 kph)

Summary

An exploration of New York’s Highline, an elevated walkway and green space.

Public transport

Catch the metro to 14 St and Eight Ave Metro station. Ends near 34 St Hudson Yards Subway.

Directions

The New York High Line walk starts on the corner of Gansevoort St and Washington St. To get there, catch the metro to 14 St and Eight Ave station and walk down Gansevoort St, which runs off W 13th St.

At the Gansevoort St entrance take the steps up to the Highline. From here you will be mostly following the Highline path in a northerly direction.

The Highline is an elevated green way trail created on a former New York railroad spur inspired by the Coulée Verte René-Dumont (tree-lined walkway) in Paris. The main attraction of the Highline is the naturalised plantings and views of the city and the Hudson River. A nice spot on the walk is the observation deck above W 17th St.

You can find several artworks along the way. For example, the artwork named ‘Still Life with Landscape (Model for a Habitat)’ is a steel and wood sculpture above 20th and 21st streets. It was built as a house for fauna such as birds and butterflies.

The Highline ends at W 34 St. However, if you don’t feel like doing the full walk you can take the elevator down to 30th St. The elevator is located just before the track winds back in the direction of the Hudson river.

To get home you can catch the subway from 34 St Hudson Yards Station.
