Directions

Starting point – Newmarket Station

The Parnell walk begins outside the Newmarket train station in Remuera Rd. From here walk down Remuera Rd in a northwesterly direction and turn right up Broadway in a northerly direction. Cross over Khyber Pass Rd and into Lumsden Green, a small park in Newmarket town centre.

Continue northwards up Davis crescent, left down Carlton Gore Rd and then right up Morgan St. At the end of Morgan St, turn right along George St and then up Titoki St, which is on the boundary of the Auckland domain.

Continue up Titoki St in a northeasterly direction and you will pass the Auckland War Memorial to your left. The War Memorial is one of New Zeland’s most important museums. Constructed in 1929 the museum is Greco-Roman in appearance and considered to be one of New Zealand’s finest heritage style buildings.

Walk to the end of Titoki St and then turn right down Domain Drive. From here turn left onto Parnell Rd into the suburb of Parnell. Parnell, which was established in 1841 is New Zealand’s oldest suburb and many of the early wooden buildings remain today.  On Parnell Rd you will pass the Holy Trinity Cathedral, which is the ‘mother church’ of the Anglican Diocese of Auckland and the catheral of the Bishop of Auckland.  Further down Parnell Rd is an assortment of restaurants and cafes, which is a great place to stop if you feel like something to eat.

Past the restaurant precinct is Garfield St. Turn right and walk eastwards down Garfield St, which turns into Cleveland Rd.

Finish – Judges Bay Reserve

Continue down Cleveland Rd, cross over Gladstone Rd and walk down Judges Bay Rd. This will take you to Judges Bay Reserve, which is where the walk ends.

Judges Bay Reserve provides fantastic views of the ocean. It is also next to the Parnell Rose Garden, which showcases a blaze of colour through summer and autumn. From here you will need to walk back to Gladstone Rd to catch a bus to the city.
