Summary

A leisurely walk through Parramatta, taking you past some of the most historic buildings in NSW, before winding back along the banks of the Parramatta river and finishing at the ferry terminal.

Public transport

Catch the train to Parramatta Station.

Directions

Starting Point – Parramatta Train Station

The Parramatta walk starts at the Parramatta train station. From the station head westwards down Parramatta Square and turn right into Church St heading in a northerly direction.

To your left on Church St you will pass St John’s Cathedral, which is one of the oldest churches in Australia. The original church was built by convicts in 1803, although this was later demolished. The oldest part of the current building was built between 1817 and 1819.

Keep walking down Church St past Parramatta Town Hall. From the Town Hall continue down Church St and cross Macquarie St. At the end of Church St, turn left down George St.

At the intersection of George St and O’Connell St you will notice the George St Gate House, which is the entrance to Parramatta Park and the site of Old Government House, used by ten NSW governors between 1800 and 1847.

Walk through the gate heading in a westerly direction then take the path that runs along the road in a north-westerly direction. From here you should be able to see Old Government House in the distance.

Further down the road is the Parramatta river. Cross the river at Noller footbridge, turn right and take the path that heads eastwards in the direction of Parramatta town centre, but on the opposite side of the river.

This path will take you to the back of Commbank Stadium and under the O’Connell St bridge. The river walk continues past the Marsden St Weir, under Lennox bridge and through the David Frater Reserve. Keep walking until you reach the River Foreshore Reserve. Walk up the path that takes you to the Elizabeth St footbridge.

Finish – Parramatta Wharf

Cross the bridge and walk in a southeasterly direction past the Charles St Weir. From here it is just a short walk to the Parramatta wharf where the walk ends. From the wharf you can catch a ferry back to the city, or walk back to the station and catch a train home.
